Essential Oils During Pregnancy

Not sure if you've dived into the world of Google when it comes to finding information out about using Essential Oils during pregnancy, but there's a lot of rubbish out there. Actually it's not just rubbish to do with oils- it's to do with all things related to what you should or shouldn't do during pregnancy and it's one of the reasons I opened up a Pregnancy Day Spa in the first place. 

I studied aromatherapy 14 years ago, and I've been making Pregnancy Skincare products for the last 5 years- so I like to think that I have a really solid understanding of what is okay and what isn't. Essential oils have been used for YEARS by midwives, nurses, doulas and pregnant women and have shown no harm to the mother or baby. In fact Jane Buckle, RN (Buckle, 2015) states;

“There are no records of abnormal fetuses or aborted fetuses as a result of the normal use of essential oils, either by inhalation or by topical application.”


Straight up- I am a solid doTERRA oils fan. I wouldn't recommend anything else to you (even though I've tried bucket lots of different types, I just wholeheartedly love this range, how potent they are and the ethics behind the company). One of the absolute fundamentals as to why I don't want you using anything else out there is it's not thinned out with anything else (no other carrier oils or alcohol YUCK). You can tell it's really pure just by pouring it from the bottle. I could go on all day about it, but I won't. Let's just get into the juicy oils that will support you during pregnancy!

I wouldn't go bananas with internal use (swallowing the oils) during pregnancy- mainly because of how potent they are. Just to give you an idea- ONE DROP of Peppermint Essential Oil is the equivalent of 28 cups of herbal peppermint tea.... that's right, ONE DROP! What I would happily use myself and recommend to others is do what you feel happy with. So let's say you're in your first trimester and feeling super sick- my instinct is to reach for the Ginger & Lemon and pop a drop of each into hot water in the morning. Some women aren't keen to do anything in the first trimester with oils- however they will happily reach for synthetic medication that comes with other side effects.

Babe: GO NATURAL. Just do it gently. 

You can use the oils safely aromatically with a beautiful diffuser of your choice. Or you could use them diluted with some Fractionated Coconut Oil on your skin. It takes 30 seconds for the essential oils to get into your blood stream. I seriously love natural, plant based medicine!
