Mums, I know you’re busy – whether you’re a stay-at-home mum or a working mum in any capacity, life is demanding. And draining. And exhausting. Most days it feels impossible to even think about yourself or your needs. Have you heard of the new notion - romanticising your life? The idea is, romanticising your life is a perspective or approach where you imbue ordinary or mundane parts of your life with a sense of beauty, excitement and significance. It involves seeing and appreciating the world through a lens that emphasises the magical, positive or aesthetically pleasing parts of your life. This approach heavily emphasises how important it is to take care of yourself. Here are some easy – and mostly free – ways to honor yourself, even in small bursts:
- Breathe!: Practice deep, diaphragmatic breathing throughout your day. It takes just 30 seconds and can make a big difference. Take big breaths and close your eyes when your kids are frustrating you.
- Mindfulness Meditation: Download a mindfulness meditation app and listen to a 2-3 minute guided exercise. You’ve got 2 minutes, right? Envision yourself as a monk in Thailand 🍃
- Walk or Jog: Whether it’s 10 minutes or 40, get outside and lighten your mind while energizing your body. Take the time to notice the beauty of your surroundings - the plants, flowers, trees, animals, people. Appreciate your body and its ability to exercise.
- Be an Influencer: Make a private story with one or two friends to view it. Upload photos throughout your day of moments you enjoy.
- Enjoy a Cuppa: Make that cup of tea or kombucha you’ve been meaning to. Sit down and savor it. You’re a barista who makes damn good coffee!
- Call a Friend: Actually phone a friend and have a conversation – even if it’s just 10 minutes. Tell them you love them.
- Send a Sweet Message: Let your partner, mum or family member know you’re thinking about them during the day.
- Help Someone: Doing something kind for others boosts your own well-being. Even if it’s as simple as helping your kids get dressed.
- Put on Makeup or Dress up: If you like wearing makeup, take a few minutes to feel lovely. Put on some of your favourite clothes. Look good, feel good. Plus - putting on makeup is fun, you’re an artist baby!
- Plan Your Favorite Meal: Even if you buy it, enjoy it guilt-free. You’re a chef, baby!
- Screen-Free Time: Turn off screens 30-60 minutes before bedtime for better sleep. Read a book, journal. Easier said than done, but I promise it’s worth it!
- Relax with a Bath or Shower: Unwind and cleanse your mind and body. Envision yourself at a day spa.
- Stretch Break: Take a minute to stretch your body. Reach for the sky, touch your toes, and release tension. Connect your mind to your muscles, you’re a yoga teacher! <3
- Quick Journaling: Jot down a few sentences about your day or your feelings. It’s therapeutic and takes minimal time. It’s amazing to read back on in the future, to see your growth and connect with yourself.
- Listen to Music: Create a playlist of your favorite tunes. Music can instantly lift your mood. Sing loud.
- Hydrate: Sip water throughout the day. Staying hydrated impacts your energy levels and overall well-being. Find some yummy water recipes on Pinterest. Water doesn’t have to be boring, make it aesthetically pleasing too!
- Mini Dance Party: Put on a lively song and dance with your kids. It’s fun and gets your blood flowing.
- Gratitude List: Write down three things you’re grateful for. Gratitude boosts positivity. You can also write down 3 things you’re not grateful for.
- Mindful Eating: Savor each bite during meals. No screens. Be present and enjoy your food. You’re a chef, enjoy every bite!
- Declutter a Small Area: Tackle a drawer, shelf, or corner. Organizing can be therapeutic.
- Positive Affirmations: Repeat affirmations like “I am enough” or “I am doing my best.”
- Nature Break: Step outside, even if it’s just to your backyard. Breathe in fresh air.
- Read a Poem: Find a short poem online and let its words resonate with you.
- Laugh: Watch a funny video or recall a hilarious memory. Write down funny things your kids say. Laughter is medicine.
- Set Boundaries: Learn to say no when needed. Prioritize your well-being.
Remember, self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential for being the best mom you can be! 🌟
